Things I learned this week…
Y’all seem to be enjoying all these random things I’ve been learning, so I’ll continue sharing them unless the digital tomatoes start coming my way ;)
Here’s the latest batch of things that have fascinated me…
I’d love it if anyone could get to the bottom of #5 down there!
#1. There’s a dating site for FIRE lovers! –> FireDating.me — “The first and only dating website for FIRE people.” Haha… And with over 500 users so far it seems to be doing pretty well! Anyone wanna sign up to it and then let me live vicariously through them?! ;)
#2. There’s a subreddit for “The Financially Challenged” –> reddit.com/r/povertyfinance/ (292,000 members!) — “Financial advice, frugality tips, stories, opportunities, and general guidance for people who are struggling financially. No Judgement, just advice!” There’s also a more general “Personal Finance” subreddit with over 14,000,000 members (reddit.com/r/personalfinance/), but that first one is probably a good place to start if you’re struggling hard right now.

#3. The Michelin Man actually has a real name! Shout out to Tonya Stumphauzer for passing this one along to me, in return for me sharing the secret of how Triscuits got their name :)

#4. You can buy umbrellas, batteries, toilet paper, and even ties in vending machines across Japan! — Check out this article from Japan-Talk.com –> 24 Things You Can Buy From a Japanese Vending Machine. They have the most vending machines per capita in the world at 1 for every 23 people in the country (over 5.6 million machines total!), and I’ve heard of some other less savory things being dispensed from them too ;) But will leave those to the more “adult” blogs, lol….
#5. There are a LOT of theories why people throw their shoes up on power lines, but no solid answers yet! I tried to get to the bottom of it after a friend sent me a gif and couldn’t stop wondering about it, but sadly came to the same conclusion as Snopes did (who probably researched it a wee bit more than I did ;)):
All across the United States, you’ll encounter discarded shoes hanging from wires, poles, and trees. Theories as to what these shoes signify abound, but, contrary to what one hears, there’s no one right answer.
Here are a bunch of the theories out there – got any others to add?
- Gangs marking their territory
- Memorials of where someone lost their life
- Graduating seniors celebrating
- Rituals performed by soldiers completing basic training
- Signs that someone’s lost their virginity (?!)
- Bullies taking them from defenseless kids and taunting them (hah!)
- And to better increase visibility for low-flying aircraft
#6. People are making face masks out of coffee filters! There’s a whole thread of them on Instagram! –> instagram.com/explore/tags/coffeefiltermask/
#7. And lastly, there’s more than one option for kitty doors! Check out this one I bought and even installed myself – after taking way too many hours than it should have ;)
A bit more expensive than the more typical doors out there ($35 @ Amazon), but check out that back-side! Hubba hubba!! Haha… And now makes our house about 1,000x more safer being able to keep the door closed and not having to worry about our 1 y/o accidentally falling down the stairs…
